Wells Gray Provincial Park: Chasing the Falls

What to expect

Three standout waterfalls in one park: Helmcken Falls (the big one — plan to see this first), Moul Falls (the one you can walk behind), and Dawson Falls (wide and easy to reach).

What I did

Drove from Vancouver — took about 6 hours to reach Wells Gray. First stop was the information centre right at the park, since cell service disappears once you're in. Picked up a park map there — they can also help arrange river rafting and accommodation (there are cabins and glamping domes available if you don't want to camp).

From there I started with Moul Falls — a 30-40 minute hike one way, easy grade, well marked, and honestly the whole park has clear trail signage so it's hard to get lost. Next was Dawson Falls, a much shorter 5-10 minute hike one way. Last was Helmcken Falls — there's a viewpoint and the South Falls Trail, but you can't get down to the water itself, only admire it from a distance.

One rule that applies park-wide: drones are not allowed anywhere in Wells Gray.

After the falls, headed toward camp. Falls Creek Campground is reached via a service road that isn't too bad. Mahood Lake Campground is a different story — see the travel tips below for the correct route in.

Travel tips

• No cell service once you're in the park — stop at the information centre first for a paper map and to arrange rafting or accommodation if you want it.
• Camping bookings go through the BC Parks site: camping.bcparks.ca. If you're from out of province, expect about $20 extra, and note that some sites only accept cash.
• Drones are banned park-wide — leave it at home.
• Falls Creek Campground is accessed via a service road — rough in spots but manageable in a regular car.
• Mahood Lake Campground: do not drive in through Wells Gray Park itself — that access road is rough with huge potholes. Instead go via 93 Mile, turn right at 100 Mile House onto the Cariboo Highway, then onto Canim-Hendrix Lake Rd. Offroading conditions start at Canim Lake S Rd, so go slow from there. Also — carry your own food, there's nothing available inside.

Best photo spots

Helmcken Falls viewpoint and the South Falls Trail are the go-to for that one, even though you can't get down to the water. TODO: add the specific time of day that worked best, plus any photo spots at Moul or Dawson.
